No, you can still play your Xbox One bought GTAO and GTA5 on the Series X. On Series X both titles can be purchased separately or as a bundle. But you aren't forced to upgrade. I was a base Xbox One owner until last week when I got a Series X, and I could still play the back compatible GTAO/5 without having to upgrade.
I assume the story only purchase is for those who have the online version and want to play the story. Reduces the input lag and feels great to play. Graphics upgrade is really nice too. So I had the original Xbox one and now I have series X. Sure the graphics upgrade is great but the biggest difference I can clearly notice is driving. At double the frames it’s so much easier to squeeze through tight spaces.
